WHEREAS due to the Omicron variant's high rate of spread, positive results from rapid antigen tests should be treated as confirmed cases of COVID-19 and do not need to be verified by a PCR test; AND WHEREAS Ontario has limited supply of rapid tests and is working to procure additional rapid tests while continuing to urge the federal government to make more rapid tests available to provinces as quickly as possible; AND WHEREAS Ontario is currently prioritizing distribution of rapid antigen tests for our most vulnerable sectors to help prevent worker shortages and protect individuals who work and live in the higher risk settings; AND WHEREAS the Town of Bancroft is a rural community that has a population that is older than the provincial average; AND WHEREAS there is concern in our rural community about the deployment of the rapid antigen tests for the general public, specifically our seniors; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT: the Bancroft Community Safety and Well-being Committee does hereby request that Ontario focus on the distribution of rapid antigen tests to seniors in rural areas, so that rapid tests are readily available to this population.
